Philosophers skepticism Essay

Skepticism, which derives from the Greek word skeptesthai, is the philosophical outlook that declares knowing anything with assurance is impossible. This term can also signify an unwillingness to accept anything without sufficient proof. Skepticism originated in the 5th century BC in Greece when certain philosophers began to express their doubts about how certain they could be about the knowledge they obtained and lived by. These philosophers include Protagoras of Abdera (480-411 BC) and Gorgias (485-380 BC), whom both showed skepticism about the world and how it is perceived. Protagoras is reported to have said that, â€Å"man is the measure of all things† Moore and Bruder (2005). He meant that each person’s opinions are different, so what is true for one person may not be for another person. Gorgias has said â€Å"nothing exists; if anything does exist, it cannot be known; if anything exists and can be known, it cannot be communicated† Moore and Bruder (2005). Gorgias’s theory was self explanatory; nothing exists and even if it did, it cannot be communicated. Therefore, there is no real proof that something exists at all. The history of Skepticism has three predominate periods: the pre-Academic, the Academic and the post Academic. The pre Academic period started with Pyrrho, who was from the western side of the Greek Pelopnnesus, Elis. He believed that true reality is unknown so judgments should not be made by anyone. Pyrrho was like Socrates because he never kept a record of his philosophy in writing. For that reason, most information regarding Pyrrho comes from his pupil’s writings, Timon. Pyrrho preferred to provide his followers with tools to live a commendable life, which included peaceful living according to the laws during his time. Pyrrho also believed that the five senses are contradictory of one another when referred to nature and essence. For example, when a person tastes honey, is the sweetness in the honey or in that person? This question is raised because what tastes good to one person may be tasteless to another. Certain foods may also look tasty but have a bitter taste (diCarlo, 2009). In these particular instances, the five senses are contradictory of one another. Pyrrho and Timon both believed that the conflicting suppositions regarding nature are impossible to decide since valid arguments can be made for each side. The Academic period began after the death of Socrates, when Plato started The Academy, a school of philosophy located in Athens. Academic skeptics introduced two important elements to skepticism: the first included developing an organized attack toward doctrinaire positions, including the metaphysics of Plato; the second included the development of rules and vocabulary to cope and interact with their experiences. One of the first Academic skeptics was Arcesilaus (315 BCE-240 BCE), who was the leader of Plato’s Academy. He channeled his energy toward the Stoics, who believed certain views are self evidently true, therefore, they cannot be doubted. The Post-Academic Skeptics included Aenesidemus and Sextus Empiricus. Aenesidemus developed the tropoi (10 modes of skepticism), â€Å"a set of skeptical argument forms, or modes, to show that judgment must be withheld on any issue. † These 10 modes of skepticism ranged from perception differences to cultural differences, and allowed a skeptic to criticize any metaphysical doctrine (diCarlo, 2009). Sextus created Empiricus’s Outlines of Pyrrhonism, which, described a school of thought which was named after the philosopher Pyrrho of Elis (c. 365-275 B. C. )†( Sextus Empiricus’s Outlines of Pyrrhonism, 2006). In the world today, skepticism is a part of human nature. Most people raise doubt because of inexperience or bad experiences from their past. Some individuals, like law enforcement officers and judges, are forced to be skeptical everyday due to their occupations. Critical decisions have a lasting effect on their lives, and the lives of those they are associated with during work. Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line everyday so skepticism is necessary to survive. Police officers are required to be doubtful because they could become vulnerable or naive if they allow others to fool them. Simply pulling someone over for a traffic violation could turn fatal if the officers do not think critically and take certain safety measures. Although the officer may have intentions on just writing the person a citation, they might feel threatened and become violent. Judges are also faced with skepticism on a daily basis because there are two sides of the story, and the judge makes the decisions. The judge has to make the right choice and determine who is being honest based on evidence and their experience. Skepticism plays a major role because the judges are usually familiar with the body language and gestures made by someone who is guilty, so they become skeptical of their behavior. Film review on the 3 idiots Essay

Farhan qureshi and raju rastogi want to re-unite with their fellow collegian, rancho, after faking a stroke aboard an air india plane, and excusing himself from his wife – trouser less – respectively. Enroute, they encounter another student, chatur ramalingam, now a successful businessman, who reminds them of a bet they had undertaken 10 years ago. The trio, while recollecting hilarious antics, including their run-ins with the dean of delhi’s imperial college of engineering, viru sahastrabudhe, race to locate rancho, at his last known address – little knowing the secret that was kept from them all this time. Rancho is a wealthy genius who studies for the sheer joy of it. Farhan wants to become a wildlife photographer, but has joined engineering college to fulfil his father’s wish. They all lived their college years to the fullest even though there are a lot of troubles happening to them. They helped each other in their own lives as well as their other dreams in life. Ii. Screenplay It has a nice script, a typical college life mostly students experience. There are a lot of troubles that they need to solve and they are together as one. Through all their sorrows and happiness they stayed on each other’s side. All praises to the screenplay writer because it was a very hilarious movie that everyone will enjoy watching it.Iii. Direction The direction was good, because there a lot happening in one sequence and the director managed to do everything he can to direct everyone else who was part of the film. Especially the dance numbers done by the students, it takes lots of patience in doing such for a film. Iv. Cinematography The cinematography is good, they featured a lot of great sights and locations. Although, i’m not sure where those locations are. (probably in india) it featured some really great shots of buildings and landscapes. And from what i read, the set that they used for the engineering school is really small. The way they shot the movie made it big. That is a really great factor. V. Editing The editing had a few issues with continuity. The movie was two hours and forty minutes long. We are not sure if that is the director’s cut we watched or if the movie was really that long. According to people who have seen the movie, it is really long. Nevertheless, they managed to squeeze all the important elements of the movie well. One of our favorite parts is when the scene is set at raju’s family’s house. The screen would change into black and white since the narrator described their house to be a perfect setting for a family who is struggling in a drama movie. A father who is sick, a mother who has no job and a sister who cannot be wed- definitely black and white. Vi. Acting Very convincing indeed, especially during the scenes wherein they needed to cry. This movie is very wholesome, because there was not a lot of sexual things going on. The setting is in a university and from our past experiences whenever we watch movies like these, there would be a lot of sexy girls trying to seduce the guys. In this movie’s case, the only â€Å"sexual† instances that we saw was when chatur tried to disrupt the concentration of the students who were studying the night before their exams by slipping â€Å"erotic magazines† inside each dormitory. And another instance was when pia was drunk and she went to the â€Å"3 idiots† dormitory. But nothing happened, no one took advantage of her sexually. Any interesting facts about the ‘making of the film’ The college and the hostel scenes were filmed at indian institute of management, bangalore, although the fictional â€Å"imperical college of engineering† depicted in the movie is situated in the city of delhi. The ragging scenes were shot in the girl’s dormitory and the resident girls saw the whole scene (not shown). The actors admitted feeling uncomfortable while getting undressed to their underwear in front of them and getting their buttocks stamped. Aamir khan’s character rancho says in the movie that people study engineering, then management, and then become bankers, so what is the whole point of studying engineering. This is exactly what chetan bhagat (the author of ‘five point someone’, the book from which the movie has been adapted) did. He studied engineering from iit, management from iim, and became a banker. While shooting the drunk scene, aamir suggested that they get really drunk and that happened on the shoot which resulted in numerous retakes and the stock of camera roll got over and the unit had to go to another shoot in bangalore (where the film was shot) to get roll. Social, political, and/or historical context for the film, controversies and issues A controversy developed a few days after the release, however, over the fact that chetan’s credit, â€Å"based on the novel five point someone by chetan bhagat† appeared in the closing credits rather than in the opening ones. At that time, bhagat stated that he â€Å"was expecting an opening credit and i was quite surprised on not seeing it. They had bought the rights, made the payment and committed to a credit in the contract. It’s there, but it’s not about it being there, it’s about the placement and the prominence.† in a 31 december 2009 blog post on his personal website, bhagat stated that he was told the movie was only 2–5% based on the book, but when he saw it, he felt that it was 70% of the book. He also argued that he was misled by the makers of the film, though he noted, that â€Å"this has nothing to do with mr. Arpit godha i am a big fan of aamir and he has made my story reach people. However, he was told by the makers not to read the book, and he hasn’t. Thus, he cannot comment on the issue in a meaningful manner.† V. What others have said about the film? Runtime may sound a bit too much but believe me, you wont know when the first half is over. Second half may seem a bit too hilarious but apart from that its a masterpiece. Munnabhai series have been awesome films, and his latest offering ‘3 idiots’ is another masterstroke from this genius. I have no idea how 5-point-someone is, all i know is that ‘3 idiots’ is an amazing/awesome/inspiring film. A treat of a film! A film that is rich in emotions, a film that leaves behind a great moral. The youth are sure to worship this film, and that will make this film a blockbuster. Cancel anything you’re planning to do till the 31st, watch ‘3 idiots’, it’s worth your time and money. Hirani and joshi’s script is simply superb. Through humor how many rights and wrongs are said. I really loved the way hirani showed us sharman’s family. A typical 1950’s family, it’s hilarious as well as genius. The film has superb performances: aamir is fantastic as funsok wang do. He’s a delight every time he appears on screen and delivers his careers finest work. Maddy excels, he’s astounding in the sequence when he shares his heart with his father. Sharman joshi is good, yet again. Omi is a masterstroke. A surprise packet, his speech sequence is sure to be remembered forever! Kareena is weak. Boman irani is mind-blowing as the vicious head. He leaves you speechless in the scene when he awards aamir the pen. Mona is average. The music is decent, with ‘all izz well’ being a complete chart-buster. The cinematography is perfect. All other departments are satisfactory. – thankfully i drank coffee during the movie but ran out of m&m chocolates and was desperate to pass the time quickly. To me a movie is an escapism from reality. I want to be thrilled and entertained. But ‘3 idiots’ was reminding me of the reality and stating the obvious philosophies. It was predictable. Everything was so nice and cheesy. Oh hug me i hug you bullshits repeated over and over again. I love nice people and nice things happening but thats in reality. In the movie i wanted something different. End of the day, i had a sense of accomplishment for sitting through the entire movie. H. Values and relevance – never try to be successful, pursue excellence – freedom to life, life is beautiful – passion leads to excellence – learning is very simple, never stop – life is management of emotions & no optimization of intelligence I. Some people feel the need to belong so strongly because of the attitudes of others and as a result people can change in negative ways driving them into negative situations. ‘The Crucible’ by Arthur Miller and ‘Mean girls’ by Mark Waters, both explore the negative impacts caused by the need to belong so strongly. In ‘The Crucible’, Arthur Miller explores the key idea of belonging through the characters and the community of Salem. Arthur Miller used this play as a hidden irony of the cold war that was happening around the same time Arthur constructed this play. He wanted people to be aware of the cold war and McCarthysim, so he used this play. Proctor is a character that is highly respected by the community, but his choices led him into a negative situation, such as the affair with Abigail and because of this he had to fight against the court and the community for what he believed. He gets so angry and fustarted with Abigail accusing him and his wife Elizebeth of witchcraft that he takes her to court and fights against her. â€Å"It (Abigail) is a whore!† The dialog here symbolises proctors frustration towards Abigail by calling her a whore. Beacause of Abigials decision to sleep with proctor just to feel the need to belong had impacted on Proctor so negatively, therefore the need to belong can have a negative impact on others.

But these are only a model not reality of change and the psychological impacts on a given individual.   The change management model provides a vehicle for use to engage a conversation. As humans learn habits, these habits are formed with the repetition of the same task. Habits are developed to help in coping with the wide range of the available data which are gathered on a daily basis. Any change management process has to take this into account. In order to cope with this variety of process we develop habits which may be in the form of routine like our daily schedule at the start of the day. It is also applicable in the way we communicate with people. But when this organized structure gets changed it has a huge impact in our like style. It is not the case that the chair is placed in different direction or the flooring has a problem but the main issue is the break in the pattern which is imposed on the people. It is definitely a little thing but takes ages to resolve. As human bein g we are more prone to big changes but little things matter a lot to us. When a change process is imposed on us we feel we have little authority to decide for the change to happen and often react negatively. A Comparative Analysis of the Lvov-Warsaw School and Frege-Russell's Tradition ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is a comparative analysis of the Lvov-Warsaw School and Frege-Russell's tradition. The Comparison of these is made on the grounds of the analysis of existence. Choosing "existence" as the object of the analysis is very essential. It is so because understanding of the category of existence is strongly connected with the whole system. Thus, while analyzing the category, one can make a reconstruction of the concept scheme (in both traditions); show their functioning; and compare them to each other. It is easy to notice that in both these systems: a) analyzing is strongly connected with the way of expressing existence in a language, b) the essential problem is to which category existence belongs, c) the main question is whether existence is a predicate. Since the problem of analyzing—especially the problem of applying logic in philosophy—played an essential role both in Frege-Russell's system and Twardowski's school, the author of this paper wants to show how this was understood there (especially application of logic to some philosophical problems). By the time they turn 18, approximately fifty to sixty percent of all children in the United States have been affected by divorce (Miller, 1). Divorce-related problems (e.g., visitation, child support, parental custody) can be ongoing sources of stress to children, even up to eight years after the initial separation. Children can be robbed of a special experience and protection called 'Family'. They move on in their lives as individuals without the understanding of what familial security and bond is. Children look out into the world and wonder why it has dealt them a cruel card in life. 'Why me' Why can?t it be Tim, the big bully. Surely he deserves it more than I do?!? (Ng, 1) There is a world of a difference between what one experiences in a healthy family versus one that is broken. The Presentation of Conflict in War Literature

Morally conflicted characters are present in all three texts, as individuals struggle to make a Judgment between what they perceive as right and wrong. In Regeneration Rivers experiences an Internal ethical conflict which Intensifies as the novel progresses. Whilst observing fellow therapist Holland work, Rivers is forced to question the moral legitimacy of his war contributions. Holland employs an intense form of therapy on voiceless patient Calla. A dream he has shortly after the experience brings this dilemma to the front of his mind, ‘in the dream he had stood in Wellhead's place.The dream seemed to be saying†¦ Don't latter yourself. There Is no distinction. ‘ Electro Convulsive Therapy (ACT) was, and still Is, a controversial treatment. Frequently used as a form of social control, and the uncertainty surrounding its effects, had led it to become a source of great fear for those it was enforced upon. The language used in this passage by Holland emphasis the asser tion of his control over Calla. Barker uses several imperatives and modal verbs, such as you must behave as becomes the hero I expect you to be' and you must talk before you leave me'.The tone here is very authoritative and could make readers feel intrusive whilst reading. Similarly, in Birdsong the main character, Stephen, experiences the horrors of war and although initially emotionally detached grows to care about the men he is serving with. The fate of his comrades fuels disdain for the war leading him to denounce it as ‘an exploration of how far men can be degraded'. As Paul Salad (1999) says the pure fury and intensity of the imagery created is†¦ Rebounded shocking and, ultimately, desperately uncomfortable to read', and the poignancy of the description by Faults creates an immense Impact on the reader. Despite this when Stephen Is Injured and offered a desk Job whilst recovering n hospital he Is ‘appalled at the Idea of being separated from the men he had fou ght with. He despised the war, but he could not leave'. This is similar to Swanson in Regeneration, who writes a poem with the lines When are you going back to them again? Are they not still your brothers through our blood?.This moral conflict can be amplified beyond the individual. In the poem Easter 1 91 6 W. B Yeats explores the cost of freedom. The issue of Home Rule had dominated Irish Politics for several years until eventually coming to a head In April 1916, when a group of rebels seized the UAPITA city of Dublin. Yeats demonstrates his mixed feelings with the oxymoron phrase ‘a terrible beauty is born', by personifying this freedom with the verb ‘born', Yeats seems to be implying that the cause has taken on a life of its own and those who created it no longer have control.Through the simile ‘as a mother names her child when sleep at last has come on limbs that had run wild', Yeats suggests that the rebel leaders had childlike enthusiasm for their cause, but Like children were naive The true brilliance of Yeats poem is, as Decline Kibbled (1995) said, is the honesty in which he debates the issue', this honesty makes the poem more emotive and, moreover, gives modern readers an insight into those turbulent times. The outbreak of war came at a time when rigid social structures where in place; there was a sense that those who didn't fit the ideal where not to be accepted – such as homosexuals.The war brought about change, some matters where by no means altered dramatically but it at least brought the old principles into conflict with the new. Whereas other texts show us individuals struggling to accept their personal identities n a society that condemns them, the poem The Soldier by Rupert Brooke presents a character whose position is supported by the masses (through propaganda) and is no doubt as to who they are and what they stand for.His certainty is evident in the opening line of the poem, ‘if I should die think only this of me', this imperative expresses his confidence and as the poem is written in sonnet form his love for his country cannot be denied. However, Brooke never actually saw active service and therefore his genuine understanding of the war is feeble. Stalwartly (2002) writes of Brooke ‘had Brooke lived to experience†¦ The trenches of the Western Front, it is hard to imagine that the poet†¦ Would not have written as realistically as Owen†¦ . We must thus ask whether his opinion would differ if he had the experiences of his contemporaries and without the weight of public disagreement on his shoulders it is easy to see why Brooke was so self-assured in his poem he is ‘a soldier poet†¦ Not a war poet. ‘ Contrastingly, in Regeneration an element of Robert Graver's identity does not agree at all with social views of the time. Homosexuality was actually illegal in the United Kingdom from 1533 up until 1967, therefore for Graves the issue goes beyond disappr oval.In chapter 17 Graves tells Swanson about Peter – a man they both knew of on the front line – ‘he was arrested' for ‘soliciting outside the local barracks'. The shock of this leads Graves to denounce his identity, saying ‘it's only fair to tell you that†¦ Since that happened my affections have been running in more normal channels'. The suspension marks here imply uncertainty and the abstract noun ‘normal' is used almost as a synonym as Graves doesn't seem able to clearly associate himself with homosexuality.It is clear in this passage that Graves cares greatly about how others perceive him; this consciousness leads to him changing who he is. Although in Birdsong, Weir experiences similar scrutiny due to him still being a virgin it is not seen as wrong but rather a source of amusement and pity for his comrades. Stephen takes it upon himself to ‘solve' Weir's problem and forces him into a situation which leaves him ‘shaken and pale'. Both Weir and Graves feel a certain amount of shame for the uncommon elements of their identity, but a key difference is that Graves allows himself to be changed.Undoubtedly, Weir is conflicted in his feelings towards his virginity, it leads him to be filled with anxiety but yet he also ‘convince[s] himself that what he had missed could not be remarkable'. The verb ‘could' suggest doubt and it is unclear whether Weir is ever certain in his conclusions, despite his reluctance to give away something that is linked so intrinsically to his own identity he still feels ‘it had come to nothing but humiliation'. In a private letter to his mother Wilfred Owen writes how ‘[he] nearly broke down and let [himself] drown'.This sentence alone encapsulates the psychological struggle men underwent in the thin himself and allowed his self-will to slip. In his poem Exposure we see what led to this breakdown. The ABA rhyme scheme highlights the cyclical nature of trench warfare and the anaphoric use of ‘but nothing happens' further supports this idea, somehow the men always end up back where they started and their ‘brains ached' from it. It can be argued that being Worried by silence' is worse than the The alternative and psychological breakdowns are a result of the repeated tension of waiting.Owen manages to pull himself back up and carry on but for some men it wasn't as easy. Burns in Regeneration struggles to escape his all consuming psychological trauma. Even Rivers, the doctor who is supposed to be helping him overcome this, is ‘defeated' by it. In chapter 15 Rivers goes to visit Burns but he is quick to see that he is struggling to re-establish himself and ‘however hard Burns tried to thrust the memories of the war behind him, the nightmare followed'. The use of the verb thrust' here implies force and suggests that Burns is desperately trying to escape but this is a battle he is loosing.Burns illness takes over him mi nd and body, preventing him from eating and turning him yellow skinned'. Philip Gibbs, a journalist on the Western Front, later recalled that the shell-shock cases were the worst to see and the worst to cure†¦ Sturdy, men shaking with ague, mouthing like madman, figures of dreadful terror, speechless and uncontrollable'. Brenna in Birdsong suffers a similar fate. Elizabeth goes to visit him in a care home in order to seek out more information on her grandfather and the war.Brenna kept his sanity through the wars horrors (such as pulling his brothers rotting body out of a shell hole) but once he returned home his mental state declined. What is clear is that Brenna was alone in his battle with his psyche, Elizabeth curses how she cannot ‘restore poor Brakeman's life or take away the pity of the past'. As seen in Exposure Brakeman's life is monotonous. He spent his entire post war existence in and out of field hospitals and care homes without a single visitor. Without anythi ng or anyone to cling to Brenna is overpowered by his psychological conflict.We see a conflict in gender roles during the war and thus it is manifested in war literature. Women were evolving in the absence of men and when the men did finally come back they were expected to regress. There is a subversion of gender roles, women must become more hardened and ‘masculine' to be able to support themselves and their remaining family, while the devastation of the war brings out the more compassionate feminine' qualities in men. The war broke down boundaries and the conflict lay in the perceptions of what now separates men and women.The women in Regeneration, Legalize in particular, represents a new radical form of women. Legalize relished her freedom so much that doesn't want her husband ‘back on leave' or even When it's over' and alludes to divorcing him. At the time divorces were still infrequent and frowned upon – so through her consideration of it we see how the mind set of women has progressed. Prior seems bewildered by this noting women have ‘changed so much during the war' and how ‘he was so out of touch with women'. Siegfried Swanson wrote an ironic sonnet about women entitled The Glory of Women.There is an accusatory tone running throughout the poem, such as the anaphoric use of the first person personal pronoun you'. This use of direct address emphasis Caisson's frustration with those at home. The opening line of the poem presents the idea that Eros'. In this poem women are seen to love heroics but this is a one sided opinion. Women gave out white feathers at home to those who were not serving to denounce them as cowards, on the surface this seems quite callous and we can see why Swanson puts women on par with the enemy -German mother'.However, the women giving out these feathers no doubt had husbands, brothers and sons fighting on the front line, therefore seeing men safe at home no doubt enraged them. Why should their family fight and die while some stay at home? These conflicting views question whether indeed the greatest conflicts are.. Teen one person and himself, it may be that (Sharon Mennonite 2002) ‘gender stereotyping may distort and repress the personal development of individuals of both genders'. The parallels between Isabella and Elizabeth are evident – both have affairs and illegitimate children as a result.However, the circumstances in which these events happen are very different. In pre- war France Isabella is condemned by Renee for her affair, he shouts that she will ‘[go] to hell' for what she has done. The reference to her father – ‘and you're father†¦ What can he do†¦? Gives insight into how women were viewed at the time, as objects or sessions of the men in their lives. However, Elizabethan affair with a married man in the sass is met with little scorn or resistance. This is again indicative of the time, after both wars women had begun to camp aign for equality with movements such as the Suffragettes.When Elizabeth tells her friends they are ‘displeased' but for superficial reasons such as Jealousy, even her mother who is from an older generation is pleased for her. The similarities between these two women may have been done by Faults to show the changing attitudes towards gender and shows how after the conflicting years progress is eventually made. The conflicting opinions of what was happening on the battlefield created a huge separation between the soldiers and the public.In The Hero by Siegfried Swanson a mother is told of the death of her son. However, she is not told the complete truth, she is told that her son died honorably and ‘as he'd have wished'. The truth is though that her son was ‘a useless swine' (or so the ‘brother officer' thinks) and he died ‘panicking down [a] trench'. The annalistic imagery used here creates a stark contrast with phrases such as ‘her glorious boy, t his further emphasis the difference in what those at home re being told compared with what is actually happening.Both stanza one and three have a matching rhyme scheme (BACK), this could have been done by Swanson to show the two versions of the story, whereas the falter in the rhyme in the second stanza (ABACA) shows the discrepancy of the ‘gallant lies'. These lies and propaganda lead to soldiers such as Billy Prior feeling disconnected when they are home on leave. When walking along the beach with Sarah, Prior describes the public as ‘black figures, like insects' this metaphor extends as Prior describes their movements saying they[swarm] across the beach like insects'.The connotations of the negative imagery of insects, especially flies, are foulness and decay. This separation showed how the war took lives in every sense of the word as some soldiers couldn't find a place in society after the war, Prior feels ‘like a ghost' among them. Weir experiences a similar f eeling of disconnection when home on leave, he goes to visit his parents and feels strangely formal. It appears to him that the England he thought he was fighting for ceases to mean anything to him on a Weir to wonder ‘if he was going to say any word of greeting. Throughout his stay he isWaiting for the moment when the familiar wash of normality would come over him' but normality seems lost to him in the way he knew it. This indifference quickly rises into anger for Weir, after his leave he calls those at home fat pigs' who ‘have got no idea what lives are led for them'. He then goes on to wish ‘a great bombardment would smash down†¦ And kill the whole lot of them†¦ Particularly my family. ‘. Like in The Hero the annalistic imagery emphasis the disdain Weir has for those at home and this anger fuels the conflict between the battlefield and the home front.

Citizen Bank to continue their remittance program and to continue to allow the matricula consular card as a proper form of identification. My argument will be that it is more ethical for U. S. bank to offer business to immigrants, even if they are illegal immigrants, but I believe that the argument that the matricula card is a valid source of identification is false. The matricula consular card is a source of identification that is issued by the Mexican government to help them keep better track of their citizens who are abroad, mostly for tax purposes.A Mexican citizen can only obtain this card if they provided an original birth certificate, photo identification and proof of residency within the United States, such as a utility bill. In 2001 Wells Fargo began accepting matricula cards as a proper form of identification along with U. S. Bank a month later. It was not long thereafter where U. S. Citizen Bank joine d in with heavy marketing to draw in to the untapped marked of the increasing population of Hispanics in the United States.With the acceptance of these cards the banks were now allowed to offer remittance services to Mexican immigrants where they could send money back to an account in Mexico, which is an issue I will be discussing later. In 2002, thirteen states accepted the matricula as a valid form of identification, including 800 sheriff offices. In my perspective, the idea that not only banks but many states and hundreds of sheriff offices accept a Mexican issued form of identification which proves valid U. S. citizenship just by representation of a utility bill is absolutely ludicrous.In my opinion there is no way that any entity or governmental agency actually thinks that a utility bill presented to a consular office of the Mexican government can prove that you are a United States citizen. If you are a United States Citizen you should have some other source of legal identifica tion on you that is issued by the United States. This proves that banks, states and sheriff offices all know that there are some people who possess this card that are not legal residents of the United States.This shows that with the matricula card being deemed a valid form of identification by banks, it is going to be easier for illegal immigrants who possess the card to get banking services. This leads to the ethical question of is it ethical for banks to knowingly offer banking services to potential illegal immigrants possessing the matricula card? To this question I answer, yes. As questioned in the case, I believe that it U. S. Citizen’s corporate duty to obey the laws of the United States and support the values of our country.This leads to many people arguing that they these banks are going against what the United States wants in keeping illegal immigrants out of our country. It is proven that the United States government spends millions of dollars each year on border pa trol to keep illegal immigrants out of our country. However, once the illegal immigrants get into our country the United States government seems to take a completely different stance and their view almost seems to switch to the complete other side. Once the illegal immigrants hop the border it almost seems like the government is more worried about helping them.We have states accepting illegitimate forms of identification as being valid and in October of 2001, the U. S. PATRIOT act instructed the Secretary of the U. S. Treasury to provide regulations for certain customer identification that banks needed to obtain before they could open an account and they never did. We also have the chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, who was also a former regulator, commenting on the matricula, saying that the banks are doing â€Å"good business† and he mentioned that accepting it as valid identification was â€Å"good policy. The banks are doing their corporate duty to ou r nation by continuing to accept the matricula as proof that these immigrants are U. S. citizens because in my opinion, if they United States government was against it, they would be stopping it! It is also in the banks best interest to do business with these immigrants. They saw a huge untapped opportunity in the market of increasing Hispanics and they decided to pursue it. It has ultimately affected their bottom line showing a substantial amount of profits through their business.I am going to make the assumption that by the banks offering their services to immigrants that the customers are doing more overall good than bad and that there is an extremely low number of customers who are actually using this money to fund drug cartels or to transfer money to terrorist funds and here is why. The profit of banks relies a lot on trust. Banks need to trust the customer that they will pay them back. As mentioned in the article it says that when customer wanted banking services they would of ten go and sit down to with a banker to go through their products. I believe that this face to face interaction weeds out many of the â€Å"terrorists† and â€Å"drug smugglers† of the group. Also, I believe that the banks are truly helping people that are in need. These are immigrants who are coming to America and looking for a better way of life than what they had before. They may have left their family and friends to get away from a terrible way of life in their foreign country.The banks are helping these people understand how to manage their money, and they are giving them the ability to send some of the money they are making back to their foreign country to help support their family or whoever they so please. They no longer have to sit or hide bundles of cash leaving them bigger targets for robbery. Again, making the assumption that the banks customers are doing more harm than good, I believe that this benefits our society as a whole. In society, we want all of ou r people to have a fair chance and that is exactly what the banks and the United States are doing.They are giving the 45-55% of Hispanics who’ve never had a banking relationship a fair chance at success. Where my biggest issue lies in this case is in the hypocrisy of the United States. I believe with the matricula being accepted by many states and sheriffs throughout the United States that it certainly acceptable for U. S. Citizen to accept it as valid identification as well, being that they are looking to make money and that they are certainly helping out a Hispanic population.However, the United States should make a stand on either side of this issue, because you most certainly can’t have both. You can’t set up border patrol to keep Mexicans out than say that a card issued by the Mexican government proves that they are a United States citizen and let them stay in our country. Although they are not forced to pay taxes, and we as American are financially hurt be cause we are forced to pay more taxes on them, this small financial loss to our society is outweighed by what should be our willingness to help people that are in need.Now it is probably true that a few of these banks may be allowing the certain aid of drug cartels or other illegal acts. But who says that if I go to a bank and apply for a loan that they know that I won’t use that money to buy an immense amount of drugs? I work for a bank and we recently had a transaction where we thought we had a legitimate customer and we ended up funding the mob based out of Chicago. It is the banks duty to offer services to those in need if they believe that they are a valid customer and are meeting their compliance guidelines which U.S. Citizen has. The United States should not accept this card as valid identification because for the easy answer, it is not valid identification. We have conflicting agencies, one being the FBI saying that the card is not valid and sheriff offices saying tha t it is. But as long as the United States is accepting it as valid I. D. than the banks should too because they are certainly doing more good than harm by offering their banking services to these immigrants.The United States needs to eliminate this card and come up with a better way and system to make the illegal immigrants citizens of our beautiful country. Right now American are seeing a portion of our taxes going to illegal immigrants so that their kids can go to a public school and that we can provide them with health care. This is not beneficial to our society as a whole and that I believe that if they want to come in to our country that they should have the same duties as Americans to pay taxes and to continue to better this country.In conclusion I believe that U. S. Citizen Bank is doing the right thing by allowing the Mexican immigrants a chance at banking service even with the acceptance of the illegitimate source of identification in the matricula consular card. It is bene fitting not only the bank but it is helping out those that are in need of these services and giving them a chance to help their friends and family at home that may be struggling. The basis of this decision to continue is solely because of the United States government acceptance of the card and not because the card is valid.
